Name who turns the opening into an order
A glazier's measurement visit should end with more than a width and height. The client needs to know who converts the surveyed opening into manufacturing dimensions, who checks the proposed product and who authorises the order. These can be different people. Confusion develops when an owner thinks the glazier has checked everything while the supplier treats a sketch as customer-supplied dimensions ready for production.
For a Cyprus trade enquiry, ask the bidder to describe this chain explicitly. A sensible purchasing arrangement can allocate surveying and production sizing to the supplying glazier, with the owner confirming appearance and operating preferences. That is a proposed allocation to agree, not a statement of automatic legal liability. The glazing comparison page provides a starting point for finding providers whose stated services match replacement units, screens or other glazing work.
Distinguish preliminary dimensions from production sizes
An owner's rough measurement can help obtain an initial estimate. An architect's drawing may establish design intent. Neither automatically records the dimensions or condition of the opening when glass will be installed. Label early information accordingly and ask when a production survey becomes possible. This matters particularly where plaster, tiles, frames or thresholds will change after the first visit.
Glass size is also different from the visible opening size. AGC's traditional glazing instructions explain that dimensions account for glazing clearances, rebates, grooves and frame and glass tolerances. The practical procurement consequence is to name who applies those allowances. A client should not be asked to invent a deduction from an opening measurement, and a supplier should explain whether quoted sizes describe an opening, a complete frame or the glass itself.
Agree what the site survey includes
Ask the glazier to identify the measurement locations, relevant finished surfaces and checks needed for the selected system. Depending on the item, the record may need multiple widths and heights, diagonals, wall alignment, frame condition or hardware positions. The bidder should explain which checks are relevant rather than offering a universal survey checklist that treats a small replacement pane and a frameless screen as identical work.
Include access and concealed conditions in the survey boundary. Existing beads or trims may prevent an important dimension being verified without limited opening-up. State who authorises that work and who makes good afterwards. If an area cannot be accessed safely, mark it unverified and identify the next step. Recording an access limitation is more useful than allowing a production drawing to imply that a complete inspection occurred.
Separate measurement from glass and support design
An accurately measured panel can still be unsuitable if its composition, support or intended use has been assumed incorrectly. Ask who specifies glass type, thickness, treatments, edge work and fittings, and who establishes the requirements of the supporting construction. For an ordinary replacement, the glazier may coordinate these tasks; other applications can need a separate designer or engineer. Agree the boundary before comparing prices.
AGC's Glass Configurator FAQ describes structural calculations using dimensions, intended use, installation angle and loads, and calls for qualified engineer validation for final approval. That supports a distinction between recording geometry and approving a design. It does not mean the homeowner should select loads or calculate thickness. Ask for the applicable design evidence and responsible person, particularly where the proposed item is guarding, overhead glazing or another application with significant consequences.
Create a clear stop point before manufacture
Before the order is released, gather the final survey reference, drawing revision, product specification and outstanding queries in one place. Identify who checks technical information and who confirms visible choices such as tint, handle position and opening direction. An owner's signature should state what it approves. Agreement on appearance should not silently become a declaration that the owner has independently verified every dimension or design input.
This stop point matters because some fabrication decisions cannot be corrected by trimming on site. Pilkington states that its toughened glass must be cut, drilled and edge-worked before toughening. Ask who confirms holes, notches and hardware positions before production. If the opening remains unfinished, either postpone the final release or obtain a documented, technically supported arrangement explaining what is fixed and what can still change.
Follow a fictional change through the record
Imagine a fictional shower-screen project. The glazier visits on 6 October and labels the sketch preliminary because one wall is awaiting its final finish. On 9 October the owner selects a different tile assembly. The contractor reports that the finished wall position will change. No actual dimensional allowance is assumed here: the point is that the input used for the earlier sketch has changed before manufacture.
A useful response is to hold the production release, have the relevant finished surfaces completed and arrange the agreed final survey. The glazier issues a replacement drawing identifying what changed, and the owner confirms the visible arrangement again. Any additional visit or programme effect is recorded against the quotation. If manufacture has already begun, request the supplier's assessment of available options; do not presume the panel can be altered or assign blame from the timeline alone.
Inspect delivery and installation against the same version
The supplying party should identify the delivered items against the released order before installation. Ask what records will demonstrate that the composition, dimensions and hardware correspond to the intended items. Keep labels and relevant product documents with the project file. If something differs, the installer should identify the discrepancy and obtain a resolution before fitting proceeds rather than treating physical arrival as acceptance.
At installation, agree the checks appropriate to the supplied system, who performs them and how exceptions are recorded. These may concern operation, hardware, visible finish, seals or another specified function. Do not describe an informal demonstration as a structural test or independent certification. Where formal testing is included, name its procedure, acceptance basis and reporting party in the quotation. That keeps evidence of installation checks distinct from evidence about the product's declared performance.
Hand over dates, limits and unresolved items
The final record should connect the installed item to its location, survey date, released drawing and product specification. Add the installation date, checks completed, maintenance information and any unresolved issue with a named next action. If adjacent making-good work is excluded, describe that boundary plainly. A short, complete record is more useful than a large folder whose drawings cannot be linked to the installed panel.
When comparing providers through Building.cy, ask each to price the same responsibilities: site survey, production sizing, specification coordination, supply, fitting and handover evidence. Identify separately any engineering, access equipment, opening-up and making good. Select on the clarity of this work boundary as well as the price. The objective is that every important decision has an identified owner before manufacture, and every remaining limitation is visible when the job is handed over.
Frequently asked questions
Can I supply my own measurements for an initial quote?
Yes, if they are clearly labelled preliminary. Ask whether the supplier requires its own final survey before accepting an order and who converts opening measurements into production sizes.
Does approving a drawing mean approving every technical detail?
The approval should state its scope. Ask to distinguish your confirmation of appearance and operation from dimensional verification and technical design approval.
What if tiling changes after the glazier measures?
Notify the glazier before production release. The supplier should assess whether the change affects the survey or drawing and identify any required remeasurement.
Can toughened glass be resized during fitting?
Do not plan on that remedy. Pilkington specifies cutting, drilling and edge processing before toughening. Refer a sizing discrepancy to the supplier before fitting.
