Electrical Checks Before Adding Rooftop Solar in Cyprus
Prepare electrical information for a Cyprus solar enquiry, including supply details, protective equipment and any proposed backup circuits.

Before accepting a rooftop solar installation scope in Cyprus, ask an appropriately qualified electrical professional to identify what the existing installation can support and which changes the proposal includes. The roof layout and annual generation estimate do not establish the condition of the supply, circuits or protective equipment. In a 2026 enquiry, make those electrical assumptions visible before the price is treated as complete.
This guide concerns the existing-installation survey and its handover to the solar designer. It is not a wiring design or a set of homeowner electrical tests. Keep photographs to accessible labels and do not remove covers, alter settings or inspect live components yourself.
Identify the supply being assessed
Give the professional the supply-account information and any available installation records. Explain whether there are separate supplies, tenants or meters at the property. The intended solar connection needs an identified boundary rather than an assumption that every building belongs to the same circuit arrangement.
Describe additions made since the available records were prepared. New equipment, an altered room or another installation can make an older drawing incomplete. Mark uncertain information as uncertain so the assessment does not rely on a record that appears verified but is not.
Ask the surveyor what access and information are required. Equipment in a shared or locked area may need another responsible party to attend. A visit confined to the accessible part of the home may leave relevant electrical questions unresolved, and that limitation should appear in the findings.
Establish who is responsible for the electrical work
The Cyprus business portal describes registration with the Department of Electrical and Mechanical Services, a competency certificate and a corresponding annual registration certificate for the electrical professions it lists. Identify the actual person and professional role proposed for the work.
The same official guidance states that the annual registration certificate is valid from issue until 31/12 of the year issued. Check the current record relevant to the proposed work and date. A historical qualification document does not explain the complete current appointment.
Ask who performs the survey, prepares the electrical design and carries out the installation and commissioning tasks. Those responsibilities may be divided among parties. Keep their identities and work boundaries in the project record so that a missing check cannot disappear between the solar installer and another contractor.
Request findings rather than a generic upgrade allowance
The survey record should identify the inspected equipment and the changes the professional considers necessary for the proposed design. Ask which conclusions are confirmed and which depend on further access, investigation or a decision about the final equipment.
An allowance labelled electrical upgrades should describe its basis. It may represent a known task, a provisional amount or work outside the quote. These are different commitments. Request the scope and the process for turning an uncertain allowance into an approved instruction.
Keep condition findings separate from optional improvements. A proposal may include a change required for the intended installation as well as a preference to reorganise other equipment. The quote should allow you to understand the reason for each item before comparing alternatives.
Map proposed loads without designing circuits yourself
Describe equipment expected to operate after the project, including planned additions. The professional needs actual product information and operating assumptions where those affect the design. A homeowner’s list is a briefing input, not a circuit calculation.
Consider a hypothetical load list containing a 1-kilowatt appliance and a 2-kilowatt appliance. Their stated powers add to 3 kilowatts if they operate simultaneously at those assumed values. This arithmetic does not establish circuit suitability, starting demand or permitted loading.
Use the example to ask what the professional needs to check, rather than to select protection or cables. Product ratings, operating modes and simultaneous use require interpretation within the actual installation. A proposal should explain that assessment without asking the homeowner to infer it from a list of labels.
Separate grid-connected solar from backup
If you want power during a supply interruption, state that requirement explicitly. Ask which circuits the proposed backup function serves and which remain outside it. A generation estimate does not describe transfer behaviour or the equipment needed to operate that function.
The designer should identify the selected inverter, storage and controls and explain their compatibility. Ask for the documented limits and the professional assessment of the intended loads. The presence of a battery should not become an unsupported promise that the complete home remains powered.
Keep backup-related electrical changes as identifiable items in the scope. Circuit selection, switching arrangements and commissioning evidence need their own explanation. This guide does not prescribe those arrangements; it helps you identify whether they have actually been included.
Confirm the current connection assumptions
EAC’s household information states that the former own-consumption scheme expired on 31/12/2025 and that its older net-metering agreement note concerns applications submitted by that date. A new 2026 proposal should identify its current official route, not borrow another property’s older arrangement.
An existing application or contract should be assessed using its own record. Find the submission acknowledgement and ask the relevant authority to confirm the current status. The deadline notice should not be interpreted as proof that every earlier installation’s agreement ended.
Ask who handles the application, which project information it requires and which authority conditions remain outstanding. The electrical scope and application file should describe the same proposed system. An unresolved connection condition can change the design or programme even when installation work appears ready.
Agree the inspection and commissioning file
The professional should identify the drawings, equipment records and test evidence supplied for the completed arrangement. Ask which stages require checks before work is concealed or the system is operated. The agreed file should connect to the actual installed equipment and approved settings.
Record how variations are controlled. If a product or connection point changes, the relevant design and approval questions need reassessment. A replacement chosen for availability should not be installed against an obsolete drawing without the responsible professional’s review.
At handover, ask where operating, shutdown and maintenance information will be kept. You should understand the instructions intended for the user without being asked to undertake electrical servicing. Keep unresolved items and any operating restrictions visible in the completed project record.
Common questions
Can an accessible photograph replace the electrical survey?
It can identify labels and help plan access, but it does not establish the condition or suitability of concealed electrical work. The responsible professional should determine the required assessment.
Does a bigger inverter solve an existing-installation problem?
Equipment selection and installation condition are different questions. Request the actual finding and a design-based explanation of the proposed response.
Should electrical work be included in the solar price?
It should be clearly included or excluded, with provisional items explained. Compare complete scopes and identify who will deliver any work arranged separately.
