Buy an answerable investigation

A drainage camera survey should leave you with evidence that supports a defined decision. You might need to understand a recurring blockage, document an accessible run before renovation or investigate a suspected defect before approving excavation. A camera visit and a useful investigation are not automatically the same purchase.

Tell the contractor what prompted the enquiry, where the symptoms occur and what decision follows the report. Ask which parts of that question a camera can address and which need another method. A proposal to inspect visible internal condition is different from a promise to establish the cause of every drainage symptom.

Before comparing fees, agree the deliverables and work boundary. Building.cy’s contractor evidence guide provides the broader appointment framework. For drainage, make that framework concrete through identified runs, retrievable recordings, located observations and an honest account of incomplete coverage.

Define the runs and access included

Ask the quotation to identify the starting access points, intended direction of travel and expected endpoints. A simple marked sketch can distinguish the kitchen branch from the main outgoing drain. Number the access points so that the report, footage and any later repair quotation refer to the same locations.

Confirm who arranges lawful access to shared or neighbouring areas and how unavailable access affects the scope. Do not assume that a survey of a private property includes every connected shared section. The contractor should state what will happen if a chamber cannot be opened or the camera cannot pass an obstruction.

Separate the inspection from cleaning, blockage clearance, tracing, excavation and reinstatement. Some may be necessary, but they should have an agreed inclusion or authorisation process. An initial camera pass may document the reason visibility is poor; a cleaned follow-up pass may answer a different question about the exposed pipe.

Specify recordings you can actually use

Request the original survey video in an agreed accessible format, relevant still images and a written report. Each recording should identify the property or job, date, run and direction. Ask the contractor to preserve enough continuity for another reader to relate a close-up defect image to the surrounding pipe.

RIDGID’s CS6x manual demonstrates that such deliverables are technically feasible: that monitor records images and video to USB and creates multimedia reports. The manual also describes HQ software for managing jobs and generating customer reports. These are capabilities of specified equipment, not a requirement that your contractor owns that model. RIDGID CS6x manual.

Ask when files will be delivered and whether download access expires. A short phone clip showing the worst-looking area may help a conversation, but it is a weak substitute for the agreed survey record. Check that the delivered files open before accepting the documentation as complete.

Connect observations to locations without overstating precision

The report should tie each material observation to a run identifier, recording timestamp and stated distance reference. Ask where distance measurement begins and whether it was reset during the survey. A number displayed on a video is useful only when a reader understands what it measures.

If the purpose includes planning a repair location, ask whether surface tracing is included. Radiodetection explains that a sonde is a transmitter used to trace pipes and locate blockages or collapses with a suitable locator. That is a separate locating function from simply viewing the pipe interior. Radiodetection sonde guidance.

The same guidance makes depth display conditional on correct locator position and orientation. Ask the contractor to state how locations and depths were established and what limitations apply. Camera travel distance is not automatically a surface coordinate, while a located sonde position does not by itself provide a complete surveyed pipe alignment.

Keep observations, explanations and recommendations distinct

A useful report separates what the camera showed from the explanation offered. 'Standing water visible over this interval' is an observation. A claim that the pipe has an unsuitable gradient is an interpretation that may require further evidence. The distinction matters when the proposed response involves disruptive work.

Ask the contractor to describe visibility, deposits, water level and any interruption affecting each conclusion. A view obstructed by debris cannot support the same statement about the hidden surface as a clear view. Conversely, a visible feature should not disappear from the report merely because its significance remains uncertain.

Recommendations should explain the next decision: clean and inspect again, trace the location, obtain another investigation or price a defined repair. Ask why that step is proportionate to the finding. The report should not convert every visual irregularity into an immediate excavation instruction without discussing its relevance to your actual problem.

Require a coverage statement and specific evidence limits

At the end of the report, ask for a plain statement of what was inspected, partly inspected and not inspected. Include the reason for each gap. A camera stopped by a tight bend leaves the continuation unknown; that is different from a camera reaching and recording the intended endpoint.

A visual camera record concerns the surfaces and conditions visible during the visit. It does not, by itself, demonstrate watertightness, the condition of surrounding ground or hydraulic performance under every flow condition. If one of those questions determines your purchase, ask what additional assessment would address it.

Avoid requesting a vague certificate that the entire drainage system is 'good'. Instead, ask for a conclusion bounded by the named runs, inspection date and observed conditions. This gives a future contractor useful evidence without turning a limited visit into a promise about concealed branches or later performance.

Use the findings to choose the next proportionate step

Consider a hypothetical home where the kitchen drain repeatedly slows. A survey records deposits and standing water in the accessible branch, then stops before the next access point. The delivered evidence supports an incomplete inspection with visible deposits; it does not establish that the unviewed section is sound or collapsed.

If cleaning is separately authorised, a return recording may reveal whether the deposits concealed another feature. Suppose the repeat pass then reaches the endpoint but standing water remains. The owner can ask what further evidence would distinguish a local alignment issue from temporary flow or inspection conditions before buying a repair.

If excavation is proposed, the quotation should refer to the relevant observation and explain how its position will be established. The camera survey, locating work and repair design may be supplied by different people. Record those responsibilities explicitly so that the repair team does not inherit an unexplained mark and a disconnected video.

Agree who reports, accepts changes and closes the appointment

Name the contractor responsible for producing the survey record and explaining its findings. Identify any separate professional assessment required by the intended work. Your acceptance of file delivery confirms receipt of the purchased evidence; it should not be described as your technical approval of a repair design.

Before the visit, agree the stop point for additional cleaning, tracing or opening work. The contractor should explain the proposed change, its purpose and its effect on the deliverables. The owner or appointed project lead then approves the additional scope before it proceeds.

Use the existing guide to choosing a building contractor when a survey develops into a larger construction package. Compare trade evidence through Building.cy with the same survey brief, then agree the quoted work boundary and handover requirements. A complete appointment ends with usable records and clearly assigned unresolved questions.

Frequently asked questions

Is a drainage camera survey the same as a leak test?

No. A visual inspection does not by itself demonstrate watertightness. Ask for an appropriate separate investigation if leakage is the question.

Should cleaning be included?

Clarify it in the quote. Define whether initial inspection, cleaning and a follow-up recording are included or separately authorised.

Does the video distance tell an excavator exactly where to dig?

Not automatically. Ask how the distance is referenced and whether separate surface locating is included.

What if the camera cannot reach the endpoint?

The report should identify the stopping point, reason and uninspected continuation, then explain the next useful investigation.
